- In 2001, 349 new cases of hepatitis C were diagnosed in Peel Region
- In Ontario, there are presently between 105, 000-132,000 people who have been infected with hepatitis C. It is estimated that approximately 30,000 people do not know that they are infected
- In Peel, males aged 40 – 49 have the highest rates of hepatitis C infection, followed by females aged 30 – 39
- It is estimated that 70% of new hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections in Canada each year are related to sharing needles, syringes, swabs, filters, spoons, tourniquets and water associated with injection drug use. Worldwide estimates of HCV infection range from 50% to 100% among drug-injecting populations.
